The Best of Gobelins Animation School

Friday 15 October 8 pm and Saturday 16 October 11:30 am. Total duration 70 min No dialogue.

Animatricks proudly presents a selection of some of the best student work of Gobelins animation school from the past ten years. Here are some of them introduced by Mr. Eric Riewer, former head of the Gobelins animation department.

"One of my all time favorites is “Jurannessic” from 2002, not only because of its story about the “invention” of animation, but also for its success with a worldwide public still today as an example of good, simple storytelling, strong graphic style, and excellent character animation."

LE BUILDING

"Starting in 2003, the animation department began to introduce 3D animation into its learning programmes. 2005 was the first year its study became an obligatory part of the three year programme, and here is the first Annecy bumper film using 3D techniques. I also continue to admire this film for its hybrid form, utilizing a blend of different animation techniques, 2D hand drawn, Flash, After Effects, and 3D with Maya. Two of the directors of this film, including one admitted directly to the third year, are now supervising animators at DreamWorks in Los Angeles."

LA MIGRATION BIGOUDENN

"The first 3D films made by Gobelins animation students date from 2003 when this technique was first brought into the programme. We were not sure how long it would take to achieve the degree of polish and story-telling already achieved in 2D. We waited until the following year to begin to send out our 3D films to festivals, and to our amazement and incredible delight, the 2004 film Migration Bigoudenn was not only accepted to the world’s most prestigious CG event, Siggraph, along with two other Gobelins films, but it also won the special jury prize. In other words, it took just one year for a 3D production to achieve professional recognition as quality work."

OKTAPODI

"Oktapodi of course is a major milestone film from Gobelins, not only because of its jewel-like craftsmanship and great story-telling, but because it is the first time one of our films – and one of the rare student films – to be nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the Oscars in Hollywood."

FOR SOCKS SAKE

"In 2009, this student film, made by a Gobelins student while spending a semester as an exchange student at Calarts school in Los Angeles, won the Best Student Film Prize at Annecy. To receive the prize, Carlo had to fly in from California, as he now works at Pixar where he was hired immediately after the first screening of this film."

LE RUBAN

"I have included this film because it is one of the rare films from Gobelins made in a realistic style, and also with an outright socio-political dimension. At early screenings, we were told that its screening would be difficult in China, and once in Beijing we were asked not to show it. However, since then , the film has been selected not only for Siggraph 2010, but also for the CICDAF festival in China!"
